Four. Dollar. Pizzas. What more can I say? Other than four, dollar, GOURMET pizzas! Seriously, I, to this day, cannot imagine how Lucky Coq, sister bar to Fitzroy's trendy Bimbo Deluxe, can actually survive on selling pizzas this good, this cheap.
It must be something to do with the crowds, because hell, those tasty pizzas draw and keep them in. The place is always heaving, usually with a younger student crowd and the odd traveler, but also with lots of other sensible people who like a good, cheap feed.
My particular favourite is the proscuitto and gorgonzola pizza. The meat alone is probably worth more than $4. And they also do a fantastic dessert pizza in the dark chocolate and mascarpone delight. Beware, however, that the cheap pizzas come and go, depending on strict times, so check in advance to make sure you're not disappointed.
However, this trendy Windsor haunt - all battered sofas, KFC bucket lamps and a beautifully lamplit courtyard upstairs - isn't just about the pizzas. There's a good beer list, flavoured vodkas served from test tube-like equipment and a friendly vibe. In terms of style, this grungier spot is a little slice of the north, south of the Yarra. Well worth an escape from oh-so-trendy Chapel.
